322. What is the sacrament of Holy Orders?
(Comp
322) It is the sacrament through which the mission entrusted by Christ
to his apostles continues to be exercised in the Church until the end of time.
In brief”
(CCC 768) So that she can fulfill her mission, the Holy
Spirit "bestows upon [the Church] varied hierarchic and charismatic gifts,
and in this way directs her" (LG 4). "Henceforward the Church,
endowed with the gifts of her founder and faithfully observing his precepts of
charity, humility and self-denial, receives the mission of proclaiming and establishing
among all peoples the Kingdom of Christ and of God, and she is on earth the
seed and the beginning of that kingdom" (LG 5).
To deepen and explain
(CCC 1536) Holy Orders is the sacrament through which the
mission entrusted by Christ to his apostles continues to be exercised in the
Church until the end of time: thus it is the sacrament of apostolic ministry.
It includes three degrees: episcopate, presbyterate, and diaconate. (CCC 1116)
Sacraments are "powers that comes forth" from the Body of Christ (Cf.
Lk 5:17; 6:19; 8:46), which is ever-living and life-giving. They are actions of
the Holy Spirit at work in his Body, the Church. They are "the masterworks
of God" in the new and everlasting covenant.
Reflection
(CCC 860) In the office of the
apostles there is one aspect that cannot be transmitted: to be the chosen
witnesses of the Lord's Resurrection and so the foundation stones of the
Church. But their office also has a permanent aspect. Christ promised to remain
with them always. The divine mission entrusted by Jesus to them "will
continue to the end of time, since the Gospel they handed on is the lasting
source of all life for the Church. Therefore,… the apostles took care to
appoint successors" (LG 20; cf. Mt 28:20)
