YOUCAT Question n. 134 - Part II. Who belongs to the Catholic Church?
(Youcat
answer - repeated) Anyone who, in union with the Pope and the bishops, is
united to Jesus Christ through profession of the Catholic faith and reception
of the sacraments is in full communion with the Catholic Church.
A deepening through CCC
(CCC 838 a) "The Church knows that she is joined in many
ways to the baptized who are honored by the name of Christian, but do not
profess the Catholic faith in its entirety or have not preserved unity or
communion under the successor of Peter" (LG 15).
Reflecting and meditating
(Youcat comment)
God willed one Church
for all. Unfortunately we Christians have been unfaithful to this wish of
Christ. Nevertheless, even today we are still deeply united with one another by
our faith and common Baptism.
(CCC Comment)
(CCC 838 b) Those "who believe in Christ and have been
properly baptized are put in a certain, although imperfect, communion with the
Catholic Church" (UR 3).With the
Orthodox Churches, this communion is so profound "that it lacks little
to attain the fullness that would permit a common celebration of the Lord's
Eucharist" (Paul VI, Discourse, December 14, 1975; cf. UR 13-18).
