Matthew 26, 36-46 + CSDC and CV
(CV 41e) The State does not need to
have identical characteristics everywhere: the support aimed at strengthening
weak constitutional systems can easily be accompanied by the development of
other political players, of a cultural, social, territorial or religious
nature, alongside the State. The articulation of political authority at the
local, national and international levels is one of the best ways of giving
direction to the process of economic globalization. It is also the way to
ensure that it does not actually undermine the foundations of democracy.
CSDC 244c. The first right of the child is to “be born in
a real family”[556], a right that has not always been respected and that today
is subject to new violations because of developments in genetic technology.

[36] Then Jesus came with them to a place called
Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, "Sit here while I go over there
and pray." [37] He took along Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began
to feel sorrow and distress. [38] Then he said to them, "My soul is
sorrowful even to death. Remain here and keep watch with me." [39] He
advanced a little and fell prostrate in prayer, saying, "My Father, if it
is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet, not as I will, but as you
will." [40] When he returned to his disciples he found them asleep. He
said to Peter, "So you could not keep watch with me for one hour? [41]
Watch and pray that you may not undergo the test. The spirit is willing, but
the flesh is weak." [42] Withdrawing a second time, he prayed again,
"My Father, if it is not possible that this cup pass without my drinking
it, your will be done!" [43] Then he returned once more and found them
asleep, for they could not keep their eyes open. [44] He left them and withdrew
again and prayed a third time, saying the same thing again. [45] Then he
returned to his disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and
taking your rest? Behold, the hour is at hand when the Son of Man is to be
handed over to sinners. [46] Get up, let us go. Look, my betrayer is at
hand."
CSDC 60. The Church, sharing in mankind's joys and
hopes, in its anxieties and sadness, stands with every man and woman of
every place and time, to bring them the good news of the Kingdom of God, which
in Jesus Christ has come and continues to be present among them[73]. In the
midst of mankind and in the world she is the sacrament of God's love and,
therefore, of the most splendid hope, which inspires and sustains every
authentic undertaking for and commitment to human liberation and advancement.
The Church is present among mankind as God's tent of meeting, “God's dwelling
place among men” (cf. Rev 21:3), so that man is not alone, lost or
frightened in his task of making the world more human; thus men and women find
support in the redeeming love of Christ. As minister of salvation, the Church
is not in the abstract nor in a merely spiritual dimension, but in the context
of the history and of the world in which man lives[74]. Here mankind is met by
God's love and by the vocation to cooperate in the divine plan.
